I felt very special during my Garden District Tour
“It was cold and drizzling rain on the day of the tour. That’s probably the reason I was the only person who signed up. What a stroke of luck! My tour guide, James G, was knowledgeable and he gave perhaps the most personal, fact-filled tour I’ve ever experienced. James patiently answered all of my questions. The tour begins in a city-owned cemetery – one of the those New Orleans cemeteries famous for their above ground vaults. I thought I understood the reasons for the above ground vaults – but only partially. The complete explanation is far more interesting. We went from there to view some beautiful grand homes built from about the 1850’s to about 1872. Each has it’s own fascinating story and history (several were used as the scene for movies – older movies, and some very recent films. A number of them are now owned by movie stars. All in all, a most interesting tour and James was a delight. By the way, I would estimate that the cemetery and all of the homes are located in approximately a four square block area. It took a little over 2 hours to walk, stop and talk. The time just few by.”
