DESTREHAN PLANTATION TOUR

Here you will learn of the Destrehan family, descended from a long line of French nobility, and Charles Paquet, homme de couleur libre (free man of color) who built the French Colonial style plantation in 1787.

Maintained by a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving its vibrant history, Destrehan forgoes commercialism and focuses on historical accuracy, featuring craft demonstrations such as open-hearth cooking, bousillage construction, indigo dyeing, sugar production, and African-American herbal remedies. View an actual letter from Thomas Jefferson on display in the Jefferson Room and learn about life on an 18th – 19th-century plantation. Hear tales of spirits reported to haunt this plantation. Used as the setting for a key scene in the film INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, Destrehan is an unforgettable experience.

Learn the history of St Charles Parish plantation slavery during several different periods based on historical and legal records, and the 1811 Slave Revolt, the largest slavery uprising in U. S. history, which swept by Destrehan Plantation. Destrehan’s Miller-Haydel Museum features an 1811 Slave Revolt exhibit.
